Alethia Williams
Alethia Williams is a New York native and Harlem resident who knows firsthand the struggles surrounding completing a college education. After 7 years of not being able to afford post-secondary education due to financial constraints, Alethia is completing her final semester at Hunter College with a Bachelors of Arts in History. It was because of friends, family, non-profit organizations, the Mellons Fellowship, as well as her unwillingness to give up on her dreams, that she is able to create the H.A.R.L.E.M. event.
After graduating from Hunter College in June 2024, Alethia plans on pursuing her Juris Doctor in Law and provide legal representation specializing in the healthcare space.

“Education is our passport to the future” : A Comparative History Into Inequitable Education in Harlem and its Psychological Impact on Black Harlem Students
This research paper provides a historic comparative study of the inequitable and racially segregated education system for Black Harlem students. By analyzing the history of the Harlem public school system, pre and post the landmark decision case of Brown vs. The Board of Education, my project reflects on the psychological impacts of segregation felt throughout generations for Black Harlem residents. Through this lens, this project aims to uplift the voices of those still affected by the ramifications of a racially unjust system that keeps Black students in a cycle of poverty. In identifying these disparities, this project works towards the goal of closing the achievement gap for Black students through mental health resources and equal opportunity.
